Taipei City, first in Asia to be selected as a global bicycle city
This year, Taipei City participated in Velo-city Global for the first time, and has become a member of Cities for Cyclists (CfC). The result of Taipei City’s bicycle city building has won recognition from representatives of various cities and the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF).
Taipei City Government said that Velo-city Global is the world’s biggest bicycle conference; last year, Taipei City was selected to be the organizing city for the 2016 conference. This year, Taipei City sent a team to participate in Velo-city Global 2014 held in Adelaide, Australia, where it became a member of the CfC and exchanged the policies and experiences of cycling promotion with other member cities. During this year’s CfC conference, a member questioned whether subtropical countries are suitable for promoting cycling, and Bernhard Ensink, Secretary General of the ECF, answered that Taipei City, with its success in cycling promotion, can be a role model for others. The result of Taipei City’s public bicycle, YouBike, has also astonished representatives from various countries.
The City Government delegation also visited Stephen Yarwood, Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide, Australia. Besides showing appreciation for Lord Mayor Yarwood’s support in helping Taipei to become the host of Velo-city Global 2016, the delegation invited him to give a keynote speech in “the fifth United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) Congress” to be held in Taipei on Sep. 3, 2014. Lord Mayor Yarwood accepted the invitation and said that he had a good impression of Taipei City during his visit last year, and is glad to return to Taiwan in September to share his experiences. At the welcome dinner, Lord Mayor Yarwood praised Taipei City Mayor Hau in front of the representatives from various countries for his emphasis on, and great achievements in, green transportation. Lord Mayor Yarwood believes that Taipei City can be an example for other cities in promoting green transportation.
