More than 300 minibuses are now in the service of passengers with disabilities in Taipei City
Taipei minibus service upgraded! According to information from the Taipei Public Transportation Office today (July 3), the number of minibus for passengers with disabilities had been increasing that exceeded 300 by July 3, 2014 to 306. More minibuses available will ease the highly demanding situation for minibuses.
At the end of 2006 when the Taipei City Mayor Mr. Hao took up his post, there were only 116 minibuses in service. In past years, Mr. Hao had been urging the public to make donations to have more minibuses, and so many kind people and organizations had made such donation. The number of minibuses thus increased greatly. Apart from that, the Taipei Public Transportation Office had also sought help from private companies for rental of minibuses in the hope of serving more people with disabilities. As specified in the original city government’s white paper, the goal was to have 300 minibuses by end of 2014, and the goal had been achieved earlier. Since there were many kind people willing to donate minibuses, it’s expected to have at least 320 minibuses by end of 2014 which will be adequate to meet the need of passengers with severe lower limb disabilities (special grade A). As for passengers with milder physical disabilities, the service will be also improved.
In addition to minibuses, the Office had been promoting other barrier-free transportation such as low-floor buses, coaches and barrier-free taxies, and number of these types of transportation also increased. The Office will continue to work on expansion and upgrade of barrier-free transportation service in favor of passengers with disabilities.
