Visionary Taipei City: Bikeway Network Plan
To transform bicycles into a major form of transportation and realizing the “last mile” in the seamless green transportation and “safe riding” to experience the City’s beauty and elegance, the Department of Transportation (DOT), Taipei City Government, has drawn up a bikeway network plan. Three transverse and three longitudinal bikeways in the city area will first be laid in 2015, and the length of bikeways in Taipei City will reach 500km by 2016. It is estimated that by 2018, bikeways will be laid on all roads of the City that are wider than 40 m.
Taipei City’s bikeways integrate the concept of a living circle in the design, while considering the distribution of YouBike rental stations and connecting important locations such as riverside bikeway entrances and exits, schools, public transportation stations and public bicycle rental stations within the living circle to carry out bikeway network planning. With overall consideration, a redistribution of space is implemented to lay bikeways on roads that are wider than 40 m, taking into account the rush hour traffic and parking needs of the area. Other than providing a safe riding environment and city scenery for riders, bikeways will end at 3 m before the stopping areas of buses with the phrase “Please alight and walk the bicycle” painted on the ground in the travel direction to ensure the safety of citizens waiting for buses at the roadsides. In addition, common cable trenches will be included in the bikeway construction process to significantly reduce subsequent digging of roads. Furthermore, value-added information application will be included by allowing relevant facilities to provide free Wi-Fi, creating additional functions beneficial to all citizens.
Three transverse and three longitudinal bikeways in the city area will be first laid this year (2015); they include: Ren’ai Rd., Xinyi Rd., Nanjing E. Rd., Nanjing W. Rd., Zhongshan S. Rd., Zhongshan N. Rd., Songjiang Rd., Xinsheng S. Rd., Fuxin S. Rd. and Fuxin N. Rd. Subsequently, the downtown bikeways will continue to be laid year by year. It is estimated that the City’s bikeways with pedestrian and rider separation will reach 100 km by 2016 and the total length of bikeways will reach 500 km (including 112 km of riverside bikeways). The bikeways on all roads in Taipei City with width greater than 40 m are estimated to be completed by 2018. As for the 10 downtown bridges and 12 inter-city access bridges, the planning of bicycle travelling spaces will be done in stages to increase the safety of riding bicycles on bridges.
