In cooperation with the 2010 Taipei International Flower Expo, the Taipei City Department of Transportation developed the traffic software for smart phones: “Travel to Taipei Flora Exposition”. It was the first of its kind from national government agencies to provide the public with traffic information relating to the Flower Expo, as well as real-time traffic information for Taipei City, and has proven to be extremely popular. The Flower Expo officially ended on the 25th of April 2011; however, based on the technology and experience it has inherited from the development of “Travel to Taipei Flora Exposition”, the Department of Transportation launched a revised version of the software “Fun Travel in Taipei” to continue to offer the public even more real-time traffic information, making travel in Taipei easier and more convenient.
With the goal of “Fun Travel in Taipei” set on becoming the most comprehensive traffic information software available nationwide, all of the transportation needs of the citizens of Taipei were included in its functions, such as: real time bus information, road conditions, car parks, MRT stations, YouBike, taxi, Blue Highway and intercity transportation. The wealth of information provided is ahead of any traffic-related smart phone applications of any major city in the world. The public can also use “Fun Travel in Taipei” to quickly search for any required traffic information for planning a trip, thereby reducing the amount of transportation time while also experiencing Taipei City’s soundly developed intelligent transportation systems.
Since the launch of “Fun Travel in Taipei” on April 25th, 2011, total cumulative downloads have reached 221,901 times as of the end of March 2012, with an average monthly usage of approximately 3.85 million times; the number of inquiries in a single month has exceeded 5 million times and, on average, the monthly usage per person is more than 20 times. These figures demonstrate that “Fun Travel in Taipei” has already become an important channel the public uses to obtain traffic information.
Additionally, in order to provide the public with real time traffic information that is versatile, comprehensive and accurate, the Department regularly assesses the correctness and accuracy of “Fun Travel in Taipei”, including the departure times for each bus line in the real-time bus information system. Currently the accuracy rate for the real time bus information system is already over 90% and has reached the high standards set by the Institute of Transportation MOTC (above 85%). “Fun Travel in Taipei” is an upgraded and improved version of “Travel to Taipei Flora Exposition”, and with the increasing public usage and the addition of new functions based on suggestions from users, the original features and system architecture will be adjusted and improved accordingly, with necessary funds budgeted. This year (2012), the application will undergo continuous improvements in regard to basic data maintenance, system performance and stability, user interface, etc., in order to provide the public with all-around handheld traffic information. We see traffic information as one of life’s necessities, therefore we strive to increase traffic information channels and enhance overall transportation efficiency.
