Standard operational procedure in response to emergencies on bus
After a man committed the crime by stabbing people randomly on MRT carriages, the Taipei bus companies had established the standard operational procedure in response to any emergencies on bus, and planned to organize training for bus drivers, commented by the Taipei Public Transportation Office. These measures were intended to immediately handle any emergencies threatening passenger’s safety, in order to minimize the risk
Following the standard operational procedure for emergencies on bus, passengers are able to report to bus drivers for disputes, stealing or violence, and bus drivers will attempt to stop these cases vocally by megaphones. When dangerous emergencies happen, bus drivers will immediately “pull over” the bus, “open the door for evacuation of passengers”, and “call the police”. Bus drivers will also call the ambulance on 119 to assist any injured passengers for medical admission. These measures were drawn up to minimize the risk to passengers. Taipei bus companies have held regular training and drills for bus drivers in response to emergencies that are subject to inspections by the Taipei Public Transportation Office.
At about the midday on October 2 last year (2013), an emergency occurred on Bus 18 operated by Shin-Shin Bus Company. A drunken man held a gun and committed robbery on bus. It was fortunate that the bus driver took away his gun and subdued this man. The driver followed the standard operational procedure to open the rear door for evacuation of passengers, and call the police immediately. Since the driver responded to the emergency promptly and appropriately, no one was injured.
After a man stabbed people randomly on MRT carriages, the Taipei Public Transportation Office has requested bus companies to give intense training to bus drivers on emergency response. The Office urged the public not to worry about personal safety on public transportation, and continue to support and travel by public transportation.
