“Cycling City Becoming” Workshop Introduces Fresh ideas about Livable Cities
As a step in the preparations for hosting the Velo-city Global 2016, Taipei City Government teamed up with the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) to present a workshop titled “Cycling City Becoming” on Mar. 7, 2014. At the workshop, president Marnfred Neun of EFC championed the notion of “slow transportation” besides the ten goals/suggestions ranging from cyclist-friendly route network, bike-sharing systems, a comprehensive supply chain for the cycling industry, cyclists’ and pedestrians’ rights to the road, to the ultimate vision: setting an international example for urban cycling. Citing his experience in using Taipei’s bike-sharing system ‘YouBike,’ Neun praised the City’s achievement in providing a new paradigm for urban cycling. He hoped that the full-fledged Taiwanese cycling sector would eventually contribute to partnerships that benefit all parties involved, namely the cycling authorities, industry and cyclists nationwide.
Impressed by the fact that 90% of YouBikes were used, with 90% of the users satisfied, Neun considered this easy-to-use, stable bike-sharing system among the world’s best during his 2013 visit to Taipei. He said Taipei rightfully won the bid to host Velo-city Global 2016 due to the extraordinary performance of both Taipei City Government and Mayor Hau Lung-Bin. He lauded the efforts in improving the citywide biking system over the past few years, which comprises an extensive network of riverside/downtown bikeways and cyclist etiquette awareness campaigns.
At this workshop, the Taiwanese audience will be inspired by success stories worldwide regarding urban-cycling policy implementation and the latest global trends in bicycle usage. Taipei City Government looks forward to providing a platform that bridges cyclist-friendly cities or organizations in Taiwan and beyond, making Taiwan more than just a manufacturing-oriented “bicycle kingdom,” but a genuine cyclist-friendly island that is more environmentally sustainable, livable and healthful than ever before.
