Great helper for bus waiting: Taipei Bus Information and Transit System
To enhance the convenience of bus commuters, and achieve the goal of seamless time and seamless information, Taipei City Public Transportation Office started implementing the Bus Information and Transit System in four stages in 2004, and completed it in 2009. The public can now enquire bus arrival information via website, mobile website, smart bus stops, phone enquiry system and mobile APP.
A survey conducted by a poll center entrusted by the Taipei City’s Department of Transportation shows that the satisfaction of Bus Information and Transit System users has increased from 69.7% in 2006 to 95.8% in 2015. Also, 96.8% of the public says that the system helps them in judging the bus arrival time. This shows that Bus Information and Transit System has become an important convenience service for bus commuters. The survey shows that among the convenience services provided by the system, the smart bus stop is the main mode of obtaining estimated arrival time (88.7%) by the public.
Taipei City Public Transportation Office said that besides providing estimated arrival time, the Taipei Bus Information and Transit System also provides information like “Bus not stopping due to traffic control” and “Last bus has departed”. “Bus not stopping due to traffic control” informs the public that the bus is being rerouted and will not be stopping at the bus stop due to traffic control or construction work, serving as an alert for the public not to wait at that bus stop. On the other hand, “Last bus has departed” alerts the public that the last bus has departed, and they should opt for alternative routes or other mode of transport.
To provide passengers with reduced mobility or those in need to board the bus more conveniently, the Taipei Bus Information and Transit System has, since 2012, also included the running schedule of low-floor buses in the system. In the future, new low-floor buses shall also be added to the system for the public to enquire. As at end of 2014, the City’s 2,475 low-floor buses in operation are available in the Bus Information and Transit System for enquiry, with an online rate of 100%.
To allow the public to obtain the estimated time of bus arrival more conveniently, besides increasing the stability of Bus Information and Transit System, Taipei City Public Transportation Office will also implement new smart bus stops every year if the budget allows. Priorities shall be given to bus stops of higher usage and, where the environment permits, provide the public with better bus transportation services.
