A good helper for waiting for a bus – Taipei City Real-Time Bus Information System
The Taipei Public Transportation Office had had the real-time bus information system established since 2004. The construction was carried out in four stages and completed in 2009. This system was intended to provide more convenient accessibility of bus service, and to achieve the goal of seamless connection between time and information.
The Department of Transportation of the Taipei City Government had commissioned a center for public opinion survey to conduct surveys. According to the survey results, among passengers who had accessed to the real-time bus information system, the percentage of satisfaction had increased from 69.7% in 2008 to 95.8% in 2015. About 96.8% of the passengers found this system was helpful for estimating bus arrival time. These results indicated that the real-time bus information system had become an important service system to people traveling with buses, and a majority of passengers (88.7%) obtained the estimated bus arrival time from the smart bus stops.
According to the Taipei Public Transportation Office, the real-time bus information system provided not only estimated bus arrival time but also other information such as “bus not stopping due to traffic control”, and “the last bus had departed” etc. The former information tells people that buses are unable to stop due to traffic control or road construction so people could avoid the circumstances waiting for the previously described buses. The later information, “the last bus had departed”, reminds people that the last bus had departed so they could choose other bus routes or transportation.
In consideration of people with disabilities and in need of low-floor buses, the Taipei City real-time bus information system had included in information about low-floor buses, which soon would become available since 2012. More low-floor buses would be added. By end of 2014, a total of 2,475 low-floor buses operated on road had all been included in the system; their information was ready to access with 100% online checking rate.
The Taipei Public Transportation Office, in order to provide conveniently accessible bus arrival time, will strive to ensure good stability of the real-time bus information system, and will install more smart bus stops based available budget. The smart bus stops will be in priority installed at locations with high demand, and the surrounding environment is allowed to do it.
