An appeal to public opinion about bus fare charged according to the meter

The Taipei Public Transportation Office (hereafter refers to as the Office) authorized the National Chiao Tung University to carry out the “Research Project on Taipei Metropolitan Bus Fare Structure Adjustment”. An activity, i-Discussion, was held today online on the fan page, “Let’s talk about transportation in Taipei”. This was an appeal to public opinion about bus fare to be charged according to the meter.
The Office had already organized two “Citizen’s Café” activities on November 28, 2015 and March 19, 2016 to collect public opinion about bus fare, and meanwhile, 2,000 questionnaires were sent out. A majority of people believed it was reasonable to change the current bus fare charged by sections to that based on the meter. The survey results showed that about 70% interviewees agreed to have the change, and about 60% of interviewees believed it was necessary to stipulate the starting bus fare and the maximum fare charged. Approximately 80% interviewees agreed to cancel the subsidy for normal bus fare, and leave it to the elderly, people with disabilities and children. About 70% interviewees thought it was positive to provide incentives to bus passengers.
The “i-Discussion” online activity extended similar topics from the Citizen’s Café and survey such as how fare is made up according to the meter, starting fare rate, maximum fare, subsidy for price difference, subsidy for certain groups of people, discount for transfer from other public transportation, to keep or not the existing coin payment method, repayment method, swiping bus pass while getting on or off the bus and the procedure plan, incentives for frequent bus riders. Public opinion was to be collected and taken as references for future modification of fare structure.
