According to Taipei City Traffic Engineering Office (hereafter referred to as TEO), pedestrian crossing markings will be added at the southern side of Roosevelt Road and Xinsheng S. Road intersection, in order to establish a friendly barrier-free traffic environment. Constructions are scheduled to begin in mid-May and expected to be completed at the end of the month, with the crosswalk being officially opened to pedestrians in June.
TEO mentions that the southern side of Roosevelt Road and Xinsheng S. Road intersection is a major pathway for National Taiwan University’s students to get back and forth between campus and dormitory. Traffic flows on Roosevelt Road and Xinsheng S. Road are rather heavy with many turning vehicles during weekdays. To compound matters, only bicycle crossings are available at the intersection. Hence, pedestrians are required to use the underground passage or nearby intersections to cross Roosevelt Road. In the past, considering that necessary adjustments to the number of seconds for pedestrians crossing Roosevelt Road on the ground would lead to the duration of the green light at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Xinsheng S. Road being reduced, and the intersection’s traffic efficiency being lowered, no ground pedestrian crossing had been set up at the intersection for pedestrians to cross Roosevelt Road. Nevertheless, with the idea of establishing a humanistic and friendly traffic environment in mind, TEO has re-evaluated and planned the signal timing at the intersection. After numerous test runs, it was found that the heavy traffic flows at the intersection could be alleviated with the shortest length of pedestrian crossing seconds. Hence, TEO has planned to add the pedestrian crossing marking together with barrier free ramps, in order to build a barrier-free humanistic traffic environment.
The project is scheduled to be competed at the end of May, and the crosswalk will be officially open to pedestrians in June. TEO urges pedestrians to be mindful of traffic safety during the construction period, and to follow site markings, signs and signals when crossing the road after project completion. The addition of the pedestrian crossing marking will provide both traffic safety and convenience.
